Piano Lessons

Lessons are available in person at Symphonos Studio in North Highlands CA, or virtually on Zoom.

  • What you will learn:

    • Music theory

      • How to read music notation (notes, rests, symbols, and expressions)

      • Musical concepts (chords, scales, melody, harmony, etc.)

    • Technique

      • Mindfulness and holistic health & well-being

      • Posture, coordination, finger independence, and voicing

      • History, form, style, and performance practice of western art music (classical music) and the genres of your choice

    • Ear training

      • Listening, comprehension, and music in its historical context

      • Intervallic training (fifths, octaves, etc.)

  • What you will need:

    • A quiet, safe space to practice regularly

    • A keyboard – there are different types of keyboards

      • Digital (uses electricity) or acoustic (does not use electricity)

      • Very best is full size – 88 keys, but smaller okay to start

      • Look for something with “weighted keys”

      • Ideally includes a stand and a bench – keyboard needs to be at the right height: Arms should be in an L shape – upper arms by your sides, forearms level with keyboard, feet flat on the floor

    • Foot pedal, if yours didn't come with one

    • A device with Zoom installed & internet access (for virtual lessons)

    • Access to a printer or an iPad for sheet music

  • Practice requirement:

    • We will work together to develop your ideal routine

    • Many students find it helpful to practice 30 minutes a day, six days a week, outside our lessons - same time each day
