the cricket dreams, opus 15 (2008-09; rev. 2011)

INSTRUMENTATION: solo cello, string orchestra (at least 66442), and piano

  1. Scene of an Autumn Evening

  2. The Cricket Sings

  3. The Storm and the Stream

A tone poem in three continuous movements. Inspired by a dream, the work portrays the journey of a tiny cricket through the wilderness in autumn, where he meets another friendly cricket who shares his song. The two encounter a fierce rainstorm and are swept away on a stream, kept safe floating on a leaf. At the end of the piece, the viewer awakens -- and slowly comes to the realization that it was all a dream. The piano is the narrator of the score, the soloist is the friendly cricket, and the strings are ambient nature.

The solo part was intended to be performed on an amplified bass viola da gamba, but can also be realized successfully on a cello.
